  Purpose

The investigators propose that healthy behaviors such as exercise could be increased through interactive interventions and weigh-ins (ie weekly emails, questionnaires, weigh-ins, and pay for participating in a study).

Primary Outcome Measures:
  • Increase in gym attendance [ Time Frame: up to 52 weeks ] [ Designated as safety issue: No ]

Secondary Outcome Measures:
  • Experience weight loss [ Time Frame: up to 52 weeks ] [ Designated as safety issue: No ]

Arms Assigned Interventions
No Intervention: Control
Participants who do not receive any intervention

Experimental: Intervention
Participants who are weighed both at the beginning and end of a 10 week period, receive weekly emails asking them about their exercise, and complete various questionnaires at the study's outset and read about the benefits of exercise. They also receive $100 in pay for their time and either 4 iTunes audio novels or the equivalent cash value.
Behavioral: Intervention
Receive weekly emails, information about the benefits of exercise, and compensation.

  Eligibility

Ages Eligible for Study:   18 Years to 75 Years
Genders Eligible for Study:   Both
Accepts Healthy Volunteers:   Yes
Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Stable health as determined by the screening of their medical history
  • Own an iPod
  • An interest in exercising more regularly
  • Belong to the Pottruck Gym at University of Pennsylvania
  • Interested in exercising more through the use of aerobic exercise machines

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Recent myocardial infraction
  • congestive heart failure
  • uncontrolled hypertension
  • self-report of 6 or more alcoholic beverages per day or use of any illicit drugs
  • bulimia nervosa or related behaviors
  • diabetes medication
