Genetics of Aging-Associated Conditions in Sardinia
Genetics and Epidemiology of Aging-Associated Traits in the Sardinian Population (SardiNIA)

The purpose of this study is to examine the genetic risk factors for aging associated conditions.

To simplify the genetic study of risk factors for aging-associated conditions, the Sardinian "founder population" is being used, which has developed to a large modern population over thousands of years without appreciable admixture from without, so that the genetic heterogeneity is relatively reduced. A cohort of 6,000 participants has been enrolled from a cluster of 4 towns. Family history, epidemiological data, and measures of 98 quantitative traits, including cardiovascular risk factors and facets of personality, have been collected. The study is now continuing with longitudinal studies, including second and third visits to repeat measures and add more traits. Full genome scans are being done with the goal of localizing and ultimately identifying genetic variants that account for 5% or more of the variance for each trait.
