Oral Margin Spectroscopy Detection Using Optical Spectroscopy
The goal of this clinical research study is to evaluate an imaging technology that may help clinicians see how far an area of pre-cancerous or cancerous tissue extends in the mouth.
The overall objective of this exploratory study is to evaluate the ability of optical spectroscopy to assist in margin detection for tumor resection in the oral cavity. This may provide a non-invasive method to help surgeons delineate the precise areas involved in cancerous or pre-cancerous changes at the time of surgery, which should directly impact the quality of patient care. The specific objectives of this study are to:
- Evaluate the peripheral extent of oral neoplastic lesions using a non-invasive multispectral imaging device and standard white light imaging.
- Evaluate peripheral mucosal tumor margins using a non-invasive spectroscopic point probe device.
- Compare the margins of dysplasia and carcinoma identified by multispectral imaging and spectroscopic data to those defined clinically and by histopathology.

Biospecimen Retention: Samples With DNA
Tissue removal and study biopsies to be done so that researchers can better compare the appearance and diagnosis at these sites to the images that were taken.

Multispectral digital microscope (MDM) + FastEEM4 Systems
Device: FastEEM4 System
The FastEEM4 probe is moved toward the edge of the lesion(s) until it measures what appears to be normal mouth tissue.Device: Multispectral Digital Microscope
The MDM instrument will take pictures of abnormal-appearing and normal-appearing areas in the mouth.
